Well-versed in communicative methodologies and rhetorical abstractions, Stephane Blumer’s sculptures, installations, videos and salt paintings speak in a language of the artist’s creation, one that attests to his on-going conversation with the verbal and non-verbal cues appropriated by expression.
By removing emoticons, symbols that have more pervasively begun to pepper electronic messages, from their text-based homes and inserting them, black, big and bleakly, onto white gallery walls, Blumer monochromatically magnifies their significance to feeling and function. His translation of fundamental images of emotion back into a stark, complex language is a compelling commentary on the communication between humans and their seemingly always winking minds.
